Just steps from the T station at Kenmore Square, I stumbled upon Zinga, which recently opened up, featuring self-serve frozen yogurt, where you pay by weight. With the cold weather upon us, it is hard to have cravings for a cold sweet treat, but a sign advertising free samples lured me in to this new spot.
Featuring 12 flavors to choose from each day (from over 40 kinds) and over 50 toppings, come spring this place is going to be packed. After speaking with the manager, he let me know that this is the first location of the franchise in New England, but many more are in the works for the area.
What makes their yogurt different from the rest? They offer no-sugar-added options, fat free or low calorie selections, dairy-free sorbet, gluten free varieties, and some of their yogurt contains live active cultures, making it a healthier option over ice cream. They even advertise that a few of their yogurt options are good sources of Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), are low in sodium, high in calcium, and are a low cholesterol option.
Sorbet flavors include Mango Tango and Watermelon with No Sugar Added options like Dreamy Dark Chocolate and South Seas Vanilla available for diners. Low Fat flavors include Granny’s Apple Pie, Red Velvet Cake, and Cookies & Cream.
Non-fat options include the Birthday Cake, Snickerdoodle Cookie Dough, Cherry Amaretto, and Chocolate Mint, which is the flavor I tried and loved. They welcome you to take the mini cups and sample flavors to find your own favorite yogurt to then purchase.
You can enjoy your yogurt in a bowl, on top of a brownie, or in a waffle cone and have toppings like fruit, nuts, cereal, candy, and a variety of different sauces. It is up to you to customize your own frozen yogurt masterpiece!
