Eat and Sip in the City

Mariposa & White Wine Sangria Recipe

I recently tried the brand new, first-ever agave nectar liqueur Mariposa!

Produced by Heaven Hill Distilleries of Bardstown, KY, Mariposa Agave Nectar Liqueur is a natural sweetener similar to honey. I received plenty of recipes with the bottle to sample, but I decided to create my own white sangria spiked with the product and let me tell you…it was a big hit!

The product is made from the finest agave nectar with 100-percent agave tequila and premium vodka along with hints of rose oil and gardenia. Mixed up with white wine, fruit, and sugar, it made for an awesome summer drink. I served it at a small wine and cheese party at my place and wished I had more to serve!

“Mariposa was designed to inspire the natural creativity of bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts alike who are looking for a versatile modifier,” says Hannah Venhoff, brand manager for Mariposa. “It elevates the sophistication and uniqueness of any cocktail.”

The name means butterfly in Spanish and is said to pay tribute to the Monarch butterfly that is indigenous to the Tequila region of Mexico. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/MariposaLiqueur and look out for the product in major cities throughout the country. Also check out my white sangria recipe below:

Mariposa Agave White Wine Sangria Recipe

Ingredients:

1.5 L bottle of white wine

1 large orange, chopped

1 lemon, sliced

2 limes (one sliced and one juiced)

1 apple, chopped

2 tbsp sugar

½ cup Mariposa Agave Nectar Liqueur

1 cup seltzer

Ice cubes

Directions:

First peel orange, remove seeds, and chop orange; slice up one lime; and remove core and chop apple. Also slice up one lemon.

Place chopped fruit in a pitcher and sprinkle on sugar and stir to coat fruit.

Next pour bottle of chilled white wine over fruit in pitcher (I used Yellow Tail Chardonnay).

Place the juice of one lime in the mixture.

Then pour in a ½ a cup of the Mariposa (or more depending on how strong you want the drink) and mix.

Top off your pitcher with seltzer (I used a cup, but more or less can be used).

Serve each in a glass with ice along with fruit as a garnish and enjoy!

I think there should be more cocktails or recipes that use agave nectar. It’s really a nice kind of sweetener.

I liked the use of lime juice in the drink. It kills any extra sweetness caused by Agave Nectar Liqueur. A well balanced recipe.
